Shrimp underpins fishery exports, despite price fall

  (ARGENTINA, 8/5/2016)

The seafood exports recorded in the first five months of this year decreased by 9 per cent in volume but rose 14.3 per cent in value due to the higher price achieved by some major species, especially Illex squid.

According to the latest Situation Report published by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture, between January and May this year 174,030 tonnes of seafood products were exported for a total of USD 606.8 million.

The analysis of exports by species shows that sales of hubbsi hake rose 15.8 per cent in volume to 40,831 tonnes, and 5.3 per cent value to USD 94.5 million, as the average price fell 9 per cent.

Meanwhile, 7.5 per cent less of hoki was exported but the price rise of 1.5 per cent, cushioned the fall in value to 6.1 per cent, by obtaining USD 10.6 million in revenue.

Similarly, Patagonian toothfish exports decreased by 11 per cent in volume but rose 1.2 per cent in value, to USD 30.0 million, thanks to the fact that the average price rose 11 per cent yoy.

Shrimp sales were the ones that experienced the highest growth with respect to those last year, although its price fell 7.2 per cent. The volume of exports increased by 61.8 per cent and their value by 50.2 per cent. A total of 47,931 tonnes were sold abroad for USD 284.3 million.

In the case of squid, however, the sharp rise in its price, which reached 64.9 per cent in the analyzed period made it possible to offset the decline of 50.6 per cent in volume and soften the fall by 18.6 per cent in value. In the first five months of 2016, 33.042 tonnes of Illex squid were exported for a total of USD 60.2 million.

In the case of scallops 3,009 tonnes were exported worth USD 33.0 million, figures representing increases of 32.9 per cent in terms of volume and 27.1 per cent in value.

As for the white croaker, 5,294 tonnes were sent abroad for USD 8.4 million, which represents a slight increase of 0.9 per cent in exported volumes and a growth of 14.3 per cent in value.

Italy was in fourth place with 9,596 tonnes worth USD 40.1 million and Brazil in the fifth place, which bought 12,462 tonnes worth USD 34.8 million.
