Shrimp landings moderate shrimp growth

Seafood landings fell by 7.1 per cent in the first half of this year compared to the same period of 2014, according to statistics from the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
As the Situation Report published by the entity, in the first six months of this year 383,106.4 tonnes of seafood resources were landed, compared to 412,420.2 tonnes a year earlier.
The resources that recorded lower landings were those of mackerel (Scomber japonicus), with 126.8 tonnes and a fall of 54.3 per cent year on year; and the white croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) with 9,646.9 tonnes and a drop of 41.4 per cent.
In addition, the Undersecretariat reported that 116,873 tonnes of common hake (Merluccius hubbsi) were landed, a figure which shows a decrease of 3 per cent over that last year (120,451.7 tonnes).
The squid (Illex argentinus), one of the most important species for the fishing industry in Argentina, experienced a decrease of 21.4 per cent, changing from 153,349.3 tonnes to 120,509.3 tonnes.
Meanwhile, the resource that experienced the highest increase was the anchovy (Engraulis anchovy), whose catches changed from 103 tonnes in the first half of 2014 to 5,537.8 tonnes in the same period of 2015.
Shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) landings also increased although it was so at a more moderate pace than in previous months: they changed from 35,217.1 tonnes in the first half of 2014 to 38,217.1 tonnes in the first half of 2015 (increase of 6.2 per cent).
The report highlights the increases registered for several species:
- Patagonian smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti): from 1,958.1 to 2,191.9 tonnes (11.9 per cent);
- Southern whiting (Micromesistius australis): from 4,187.5 to 4,613.8 tonnes (10.2 per cent);
- Red snapper (Sparus pagrus): from 1,950.1 to 2,133.5 tonnes (9.4 per cent);
- Argentine sea bass (Acanthistius brasiliensis): 541.3 to 830.5 tonnes (53.4 per cent).
