Seafood exports show minimal increase

Argentina exported 445,570 tonnes of seafood throughout 2014, a figure that shows a rise of 0.9 per cent compared to 2013, when 441,255 tonnes were shipped abroad.
According to statistics from the National Health Service and Food Quality Service (Senasa), last year 231,655 tonnes of fish, 7.4 per cent less, were exported compared to the previous year (249,940 tonnes).
Regarding shellfish, 213,915 tonnes were sent abroad, 11.8 per cent more than in the previous year, when 191,315 tonnes were dispatched.
The major export records were those of Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi), with 116,822 tonnes, 3.5 per cent less compared to the 121,017 tonnes exported between January and December 2013.
It was followed by Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus), with 99,105 tonnes, 2.1 per cent less than in 2013 (101,171 tonnes), and Argentine red shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri), with 105,881 tonnes, 30.2 per cent more than during the same period the previous year (81,276 tonnes).
Among the resources that increased their shipments abroad are short-tailed river stingray (Potamotrygon brachyura) fins, whose sales grew by 26.8 per cent, from 5,693 tonnes between January and December 2013 to 7,222 tonnes in the same period of 2014.
The species that recorded declines when comparing 2013 with 2014 were:
- Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri): 13.7 per cent (from 41,441 to 35,785 tonnes);
- Patagonian anchovy (Engraulis anchovy), 15.9 per cent (from 9,537 to 8,029 tonnes);
- Patagonian grenadier (Macruronus magellanicus): 8.4 per cent (from 12,620 to 11,561 tonnes);
- Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica): 9.9 per cent (from 5,518 to 4,974 tonnes);
- Pink cusk-eel (Genypterus blacodes): 17.8 per cent (from 2,590 to 2,130 tonnes);
- Striped weakfish (Cynoscion striatus): 17.6 per cent (from 15,142 to 12,485 tonnes).
