Tuna fleet reaffirms its commitment to responsible fishing

Representatives of the Spanish tuna fleet reiterated their commitment to sustainability and transparency in their fishing activities before the head of the General Secretariat of Fisheries, Carlos Dominguez.
This message was conveyed during a meeting yesterday at the headquarters of the Secretariat, attended by the Secretary General of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA), Javier Garat, and the presidents of the National Association of Freezer Tuna Vessels (ANABAC) and the Frozen Tuna Producers Organisation (OPAGAC), Jon Uría and José Luis Telletxea, respectively, as well as ship owners of both associations.
During the meeting, members of the sector explained that the latest developments in the framework of the Transparency Initiative to focus on the environmental, social and labour and food sustainability standard of the fleet. They also expressed their intention to extend it to the other fishing States to combat illegal fishing and protect resources.
"This pioneering initiative aims to contribute to tropical tuna more sustainable fisheries management from cooperation with coastal states and international organizations," CEPESCA pointed out in a press release.
The main objectives are:
- Promote the harmonization of permit conditions;
- Adapt local laws to the international legal framework in coordination with the Regional Fisheries Organisations (RFOs);
- Establish a system for co-monitoring to progress in the fight against illegal fishing.
The Spanish fleet was also committed to comply with a regional observer programme. The idea is to provide 100 per cent coverage to all vessels, preserving the electronic surveillance in the Indian Ocean due to security issues as a consequence of piracy in those waters.
CEPESCA reported that another issue discussed at the meeting was the need to increase the participation of government, the industry and scientists in the ORP "to ensure optimal management of resources" and to encourage "a positive feeling towards the settlement and renewal of fisheries agreements with third countries, achieving a stable network of tuna agreements" in the European Union.
