Climate Change Will Influence the Seafood Industry
(NORWAY, 2/17/2014)
The Earth is warming, and the oceans are absorbing the largest part of the increased heat. This and other hot topics will be addressed at the NASF 2014 on March 5th.
Moreover, the oceans absorb a large fraction of the greenhouse gases from the atmosphere impacting the ocean chemistry and contributing to the ocean acidification.
These changes impact the marine ecosystems and influence oceans deliverables to man in the form of products and services. In the North Atlantic this will challenge the seafood industry, the shipping industry and the oil and gas industry.

Where will the fishing fleet find fish in the future? Will there be a fishery in the Polar Sea? Where will the marine mammals be found? What will be the optimal areas for aquaculture in twenty years? and what are the consequences of the acidification of the oceans?

And – will there be shipping routes over the North East Passage? What about the risk and safety questions related to that?
There are definitely more questions than answers by now. Worldwide, scientists are addressing the questions on how climate change is impacting marine environment, ecosystems and human security.
Svein Sundby, senior scientist on Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, is one of the lead experts on climate changes and their impacts on marine ecosystems of the world’s oceans. Sundby has worked with the second part of the Fifth IPCC Assessment Report on “Impacts, Adaptations and Vulnerability” to be released in Japan on 31 March. This is the first time IPCC has taken up impacts on the ocean ecosystems as a main topic.
At 9th NASF, Svein Sundby will give the key-note address at the Conference Opening 09:40 on Wednesday March 5th.
