Trident Seafoods bookkeeper to be imprisoned for embezzlement

A former bookkeeper at Trident Seafoods, a seafood plant in Kodiak, Alaska will serve 46 months in a federal prison and must pay full restitution after embezzling USD 493,060 from the processing plant.

The employee, Isairis Wolfe, was sentenced in US District Court in Anchorage Alaska this week by Chief US district court judge Ralph R Beistline, the US attorney's office informed.

She had written about 52 checks on a Trident Seafoods account to four associates, all of whom would together share in the profits after cashing the checks. So as to conceal the check fraud, Wolfe created fraudulent accounting records so that the payments appeared to be legitimate, according to assistant US attorney Aunnie Steward.

All four associates have been sentenced to jail terms for helping Ms. Wolfe to embezzle the money.

According to prosecutors, Wolfe said she was using the drug methamphetamine and it clouded her judgment, thus leading her to make bad decisions that included fraud with the company’s money, The Associated Press reports. 

Judge Beistline disagreed, pointing out that Wolfe's scheme was really motivated by greed, showed that she did not care about her co-defendants and that she abused the trust of her employer, Trident Seafoods, Alaska Native News reports.

Officials stated that she used her share of the embezzled money to purchase items including diamond jewelry, a new truck and a home addition.

"Ms Wolfe's fraudulent activities significantly impacted Trident Seafood's operations,” special agent in charge of the FBI Alaska, Deirdre Fike stated. 

Fike thanked the Kodiak Police Department for their help in the investigation.

Trident Seafoods discovered the missing funds only after Wolfe was fired as the plant's bookkeeper in 2010, with the incidents beginning in January 2008, The Cordova Times reports.
