Peru's Fishing GDP Soars 34.8% in July, Driven by Anchovy Catch
(PERU, 9/2/2025)
The fishing sector contributed S/ 285 million to the national GDP, with a 97.7% increase in total landings, thanks to a larger catch of anchovy for indirect consumption.
LIMA — Peru's Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has announced that the fishing sector's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 34.8% in July 2025. This remarkable increase was fueled by a strong catch of anchovy, primarily intended for Indirect Human Consumption (IHC).

Minister of Production, Sergio González Guerrero, stated that the fishing sector's extractive and processing activities contributed an estimated S/ 285 million to the national GDP at constant prices, accounting for 0.6% of the total. Overall, the total volume of fish landings that month reached 369.2 thousand tons, marking an impressive 97.7% increase compared to the 186.7 thousand tons landed in July 2024.
Diverse Performance: From Meal to Plate
The bulk of this growth is attributed to anchovy for IHC, which is mainly used for producing fishmeal and fish oil. Landings of this resource totaled 292.1 thousand tons, a massive 645.2% increase over the 39.2 thousand tons recorded in the same month in 2024.

This exceptional performance was led by activity in the country's north-central zone, with the ports of Malabrigo (31.2%), Callao (16.4%), Tambo de Mora (13.1%), Paracas (8.0%), and Chimbote (7.5%) collectively accounting for 76.1% of the total IHC catch.
Meanwhile, landings for Direct Human Consumption (DHC), intended for human food, reached 77.1 thousand tons. In this category, significant increases were observed in the extraction of species such as bonito (+22.1%), skipjack tuna (+92.1%), and prawn (+12.3%).

Context and Sustainability
Anchovy is a fundamental biological resource for Peru's economy, as the country is the world's leading producer of fishmeal. The strong performance of the fishery in July is seen as a reflection of responsible management and the adaptive approach implemented by PRODUCE to ensure the resource's long-term sustainability.
