TASA opens first enriched anchovy processing plant

  (PERU, 9/30/2016)

The food and marine ingredient firm TASA opened the first enriched anchovy primary processing plant in Huanta, Ayacucho, as part of Sumaq project, in which it is working with Action Against Hunger Foundation.

According to the company, this project made it possible to convene, train and empower leading women from the area, who have shaped micro firms Sumaq Esmeralda and Allin Mikuy to operate the plant and distribute the processed fishery products.

It has been possible to set up this plant thanks to an agreement made between private enterprise Sumaq Esmeralda SAC and the Technological Institute of Huanta, which aims to supply this product to all existing social programs in the region.

"What we want is to coordinate with all the social programs of the local governments so they can buy this product to influence the solution of child malnutrition in the Andean highlands," explained Americo Sulca, head of the Regional Production Directorate.

According to TASA statistics, the current per capita fish consumption nationwide is 15 kilos per year, while in the Peruvian Andes it is six kilos and in remote rural areas, the figure is much lower.

TASA will be responsible for supplying primary inputs for its preparation so the commitment of the authorities of the sector is expected, since one of the major problems identified in the creation of companies that seek to contribute ideas to the various problems is the lack of fast document procedures for their creation, reported the National Fisheries Society.

The fish that will be produced by Sumaq can reach the remote communities of Ayacucho as salted, pressed and vacuum packed fish with a lifespan of three months without refrigeration.
