The company operates a chain of more than 675 Iceland and some 45 Cooltrader stores throughout the UK. In 2009 it exited the appliance business, which sold mainly freezers, to focus on of its core frozen foods retail operation. The chain plans to open about 70 new stores in 2009, including locations in about 50 stores in former Woolworths outlets. After a disastrous thaw into general groceries, the company has returned to its chilly roots in retailing frozen and chilled foods, most of which are private-label convenience foods with flat £1, £2, or £3 price tags. Iceland Foods was founded in 1970 by CEO Malcolm Walker.
