The municipality of Sotenäs and the company Lighthouse Finance have agreed on an establishment that will generate approximately 2,000 new jobs in the municipality.
The establishment means a new 140-hectare industrial area, where Europe's largest land-based fish farm will be built. It is an establishment worth SEK 17-20 billion.
Sotenäs has a long tradition of fishing and fishing industry. The municipality has the largest marine food production in the Nordic region. Over the coming decades, the seafood industry will grow significantly. The earth's population is growing and there is a growing demand for seafood produced in a sustainable way.
New jobs
Since 2015, Sotenäs has had a long-term strategy of being the leading municipality in Sweden in circular economy and symbiosis work and has created Sotenäs Symbioscentrum, which was recently praised as "Municipal Innovation of the Year".
Through Sotenäs Symbioscentrum, the municipality wants to create new jobs and new sustainable industries.
The long-term and determined work with Symbioscentrum has now entailed an agreement with Lighthouse Finance for the establishment of Europe's largest land-based fish farm.
The company will have Europe's largest and most modern land-based fish farm with a production capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon per year, for sale on the international market.
Land-based cultivation
A land-based cultivation means a limited environmental impact and a circular management, which is in line with Sotenäs municipality's long-term strategy. There will be minimal water and energy use without discharges to the sea through a closed system. The operating company will have its registered office in Sotenäs municipality.
Begins ground work
Lighthouse Finance hopes to start earthworks in 2021 and production in 2023. The plant will be fully developed and produce 100,000 tonnes within five years from the start of construction. Work has been started to produce a detailed plan for Hogenäs north - a new industrial area of ??140 hectares on municipal land. The establishment is dependent on the permit processes vis-à-vis the relevant authorities.
