Within the framework of the Seafood Expo Global taking place in Barcelona, Spain, the Cámara Peruana del Calamar Gigante (CAPECAL) together with the Sociedad Nacional de Pesca Artesanal del Perú (SONAPESCAL) and the Comité para el Manejo Sustentable del Calamar Gigante (CALAMASUR), with the support of Promperú and the technical support of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) and WWF Perú, held a conference called “The Giant Squid of the South Pacific: United towards sustainable fishing.”

At this event, Elsa Vega, president of the National Artisanal Fisheries Society of Peru (SONAPESCAL), explained to the audience the current situation of the artisanal fishery and the main actions that SONAPESCAL has carried out in the last year.

He also highlighted the importance of fighting against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and, along these lines, asked for more international support to stop the problem of irregular entry into Peru by Asian squid vessels from distant waters without using the regulatory satellite device.

“We are committed to improving the management of our fisheries and we want to continue working together to take care of tomorrow's fisheries. This also implies compliance with Peruvian regulations by the foreign fleets that enter our seas, as well as by the authorities who have the high responsibility for oversight,” she stated.

On the side of CAPECAL, president Gerardo Carrera, rescued the value of the giant squid for the industry, as it is the most important artisanal fishery in Peru, both for the national and international market.

In addition, he mentioned substantial information about the catches of the marine resource in the last five years and pointed out the efforts that the organization has made to strengthen the FIP (Fisheries Improvement Project).

“The coordination between the industry and the different agents involved in the giant squid fishery allows for great progress, strengthening fisheries management and promoting research into the resource,” he said.

Likewise, Alfonso Miranda, president of CALAMASUR, participated. The latter highlighted the contribution of the organization to the improvement in conservation and management measures of the giant squid fishery during the meetings of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO-PS).

“It is a priority to continue promoting regional conservation actions, seeking to ensure that the giant squid stock is managed based on scientific recommendations, made with rigorous and transparent evaluations,” he commented.

For his part, Gilary Morales, Marine Program Officer of WWF Peru, mentioned the current status of the FIP and the progress in the indicators according to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard, as well as the strengthening of governance and strategic alliances between actors in the production chain.

“The commitment to the sustainability of this fishery is evidenced by the good rating given to us by international entities such as Fishery Progress, and motivates all actors to continue advancing pending activities such as the second research survey of the resource and the updating of the Regulations. of Fisheries Management (ROP) of the giant squid.”, he explained.

Enrique Alonso, Global Fisheries Director of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, congratulated the great advances that both SONAPESCAL, CAPECAL and CALAMASUR, in an articulated manner, have been making in Peru to achieve improvements in the management of this fishery.

Finally, it is important to highlight the commitment of the organizations expressed in the Seafood Expo Global, which reflects the drive for sustainable and responsible development of artisanal fisheries for the future of new generations in our country. Together it is Possible!
