Nichimo Co., Ltd. is the first company in Japan to carry out this initiative together with Nihon Nosan Kogyo Co., Ltd., Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. and Showa Kosan Co., Ltd.
- Nichimo has developed a feed that contains fly meal (a type of fruit fly larva).
- Nichimo has completed the field trial they had been conducting since last fall and are now testing rainbow trout and eels raised on new feed.
- Nichimo has carried out a tasting of rainbow trout and eels raised with new feed.
A tasting event was held in Tokyo on March 22 (Friday) with the participation of more than 40 people. It got good reviews. It also performs the same as regular feed in terms of growth rate, feed efficiency and survival rate.
In recent years, against a backdrop of weak yen and declining fish catches, it has become an important ingredient in aquaculture feed and a source of protein.

The rising cost of fishmeal has become an issue and the need for alternative proteins is increasing. Nichimo has partnered with the company Flying SpArk (headquarters: Israel), and is working on a larval rearing and meal development program in Thailand, which has a warm climate and is highly productive.
Nichimo is growing fruit flies that are unique due to the disadvantages of using insect ingredients. It has less taste and smell, and thanks to the cooperation of major food companies in Thailand, it has advantages in terms of hygiene and safety.
Fruit fly meals are also expected to have side effects such as improving the immune system and reducing stress in farmed fish and is currently being verified with a research institution.

In the future, Nichimo is considering conducting feeding trials not only for rainbow trout and eel, but also for other fish species to achieve sustainable results.
Nichimo Group will continue to pursue environmentally friendly maintenance under the motto of "covering and connecting everything from the beach to the dining table."
Nichimo strives to continually expand fish sales and support the conservation of the ocean's rich resources and environmentally friendly production and distribution.
By fulfilling these responsibilities, it strives to improve its corporate value in the medium and long term.
