Jack mackerel quota assigned to Peru for 2018 increased by 16 percent

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) announced that at the end of the 6th Meeting of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), Peru managed to get a greater quota of jack mackerel for the current year.
The increase was established after the optimum status of the jack mackerel population on the high seas was evaluated.
The international meeting, which ran from January 30 to February 3 in Lima, was attended by high-ranking authorities of the 15 members of the organization: Australia, Chile, Ecuador, China, Cook Islands, Cuba, European Union, Faroe Islands, Korea , New Zealand, Russia, ChineseTaipei, the United States, Vanuatu and Peru, with the objective of guaranteeing the long-term conservation and sustainable use of the fishery resources in the South Pacific Ocean and safeguarding their ecosystems.
"During the meeting, a global quota of jack mackerel was approved on the high seas in response to the recommendations of the Scientific Committee of the RFMO. In the case of Peru, the assigned quota corresponds to 11,684 tonnes, for the year 2018, an increase of more than 16 percent with respect to the previous year," said the head of PRODUCE, Lieneke Schol.
Likewise, in the aforementioned meeting, Peru presented the initiative "Network of Exchange of Information and Experiences among Latin American and Caribbean countries to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal Fishing Not Declared and Not Regulated", whose objective is to prevent boats from fishermen who are registered in the list of illegal fishing, can enter port to carry out activities of provisioning, repairs or landing of hydrobiological resources.
In this regard, Peru has been elected to serve as the Secretariat of the Network, consisting of Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and eight countries of the Organization of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of Central America (OSPESCA).
Another of the meeting´s agreements was the approval of the Multi-Year Work Plan 2018-2021 of the Scientific Committee of the Commission, which highlights Peru´s proposal to implement intensive monitoring of giant squid resource, which allows the rapid application of precautionary measures in the management of the fishery for this resource.
