The arrival of a delegation of the Chinese company Tahiti Nui Ocean Foods to French Polynesia has generated hope that it can soon start the construction of a giant fish farm in the Hao atoll.
According to the firm's head, Wang Chen, the fish farm was originally projected to have 3,000 fish cages and he said the investors have secured the permits and would need two years to set up the facilities, Radio NZ reported.
The Chinese delegation plans to spend a fortnight in Polynesia and expect to meet with Coco Engineering, the local company that manages the project.
TnTV reported that the Chinese group could decide, during their stay, the long awaited date of the start of the famous construction site.
All earthmoving operations, in particular, are waiting for a signal to begin the gigantic project of 34 hectares.
The company developing the project, which is a subsidiary of the Chinese Tian Rui group, chose Hao in part because its runway was long enough to accommodate planes which can freight the fish directly to China.
Hao was a major military base in the last part of the last century when France carried out its nuclear weapons tests on nearby Moruroa and Fangataufa atolls.
In June Minister of Tourism Jean-Christophe Bouissou indicated that 88 per cent of the polluted areas of Hao atoll, including the plots on the right-of-way of the future aquaculture farm, had been treated and that work could therefore begin as soon as possible.
