The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) categorized the centre Arbolito belonging to the company Southern Cross Seafood as outbreak of infectious salmon anemia (ISA) virus.
Service Experts detected evidence of disease associated sign in one of the cages of the salmon centre, located in the ACS 18B, in the north of the Aysen region, near Melinka.
Sernapesca announced that the result of the sequencing process confirmed that the virus strain detected on Monday corresponds to variant ISA HPR 7A.
According to Sernapesca National Director, Juan Luis Ansoleaga, all the actions being taken by the company are part of what is included in the ISA Surveillance and Control programme for these contingencies.
The official stated that the salmon of the ISA positive cage will be deleted within the next 24 hours.
At the same time, Sernapesca activated an enhanced surveillance protocol in the other farms of Macrozone 6, located in the north of Aysen, near Melinka.
Meanwhile, inspectors of the Service were able to confirm that the biosecurity measures set by Southern Cross Seafood comply with current legislation regarding the proper handling of mortalities and silage systems.
Chile faced a major crisis in 2007 caused by the spread of ISA in several farms in the country. At that time, Sernapesca developed a contingency protocol of four main stages: early detection, containment of outbreaks, bio-safe harvesting and effective communication to all internal and external industry stakeholders.
