The Taiwanese government granted the governments of Central America, Belize, Panama and the Dominican Republic a total of USD 4.4 million to fund a regional fisheries and aquaculture project.

As part of this initiative, Taiwan gave USD 641,666 for the implementation of the project to “Support the Integration of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Central America (PRIPESCA)”.

The money was received by PRIPESCA’s regional director, Mario Gonzalez Recinos, who was accompanied by the secretary general of Central American Integration System (SICA), Juan Daniel Aleman, and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of El Salvador, Hugo Alexander Flores.

This project will be implemented by the Organization of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Central America (OSPESCA). It is hoped that through it, marine and inland fishermen in Central America receive productive support, and so do the fishing institutions in the region.

PRIPESCA was created in April 2008 and is valid for four years.

However, the Taiwanese government renewed its financial cooperation for the realization of this regional initiative.

Under this project, OSPESCA supports artisanal fisheries that develop in lakes, ponds and dams, and provides a record of fishing that will legalize the activity before the Bureau of Fisheries.

In the case of El Salvador, this project supports the Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Centre (CENDEPESCA) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), in carrying out awareness campaigns for individual fishermen to get their respective cards.

"The big goal is to encourage fishermen to register", said Flores.

On the other hand, the officer gave OSPESCA pro tempore Presidency to the Fisheries authorities of Honduras.

During his management, Flores drove the entry into force of the Code of Ethics of Centro American Fisheries and Aquaculture.
