SeaShare Depends on the Seafood Industry
(UNITED STATES, 3/16/2010)
SeaShare is a nonprofit hunger-relief organization, founded in 1994, that links seafood companies and their suppliers to food banks across the United States, providing greatly needed, high quality, nutritious seafood to feed the hungry.
SeaShare’s mission is to provide seafood for people who depend on food assistance from food banks, shelters, pantries and soup kitchens. Seashare’s mission statement’s objectives are: improved access to high quality food and improved health and nutrition for low income people in the United States; reduction of discard waste of fish in state and federal fisheries; improved utilization of seafood resources; and to end hunger in the United States.
This effective model has allowed the seafood industry, through SeaShare, to become one of the largest private sources of protein for the hunger relief in the country. Sea Share’s success depends on donations of seafood, logistical services and monetary assistance. The seafood industry has already donated over 130 million seafood meals.
SeaShare has a long and colourful history of collaboration with the nation’s leading seafood companies and their suppliers to help people in need. Their experience in the seafood industry, allows SeaShare to tailor programs that efficiently leverage several donations, generating large volumes that benefit food banks across the country, combining donated products, services, and funds to support long-term donations that no single entity could justify. SeaShare works building partnerships that create seafood donations of the highest possible value to food banks at the lowest possible cost.
For example, in the canned salmon program, SeaShare received donations of salmon from several salmon fishermen and seafood processors. These processors donated the salmon processing and canning at a reduced rate to SeaShare, the cans were supplied by a can company, freight companies shipped the canned salmon to the lower 48, label suppliers provided special SeaShare labels, labeling and inspection companies checked the cans and labeled them, and local warehouses stored them until they could be distributed. SeaShare’s financial support helped to pay for those services that couldn’t be obtained for free, which were donated at a substantially discounted rate.
Even in a year of reduced resources, during 2009, SeaShare helped the seafood industry donate 7 million servings of nutritious seafood to Americans across the country. SeaShare distributed over 344,000 lbs. of canned salmon and over 352,000 lbs. of breaded Pollock portions. Miscellaneous frozen retail fish products, salmon patties and steaks represented 706,000 lbs. Seafood was distributed to 17 states across the continental United States and Alaska. Washington State was the largest recipient of donated seafood, distributed through Food Lifeline to 179 smaller food banks. SeaShare and Food Lifeline share a long history, working together to provide nutrition to the Western Washington food bank network.
