Marine Harvest farm receives 'antibiotic-free' certification
(CHILE, 1/30/2018)
The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) deems the delivery of the first "antibiotic-free" certification to an Atlantic salmon farming center in Los Lagos region as an important milestone.
It is Yaotal center, in central Chiloé, belonging to the Norwegian capital company Marine Harvest, which proved that its fish are not treated with antimicrobials during the sea culture phase.
The deputy director of Aquaculture of Sernapesca, Alicia Gallardo, emphasized that this certification is added to that of several other coho salmon centers (approximately 50 percent of the coho salmon centers have this certificate) and to other centers of the Magallanes region.
Gallardo recalled that this certification is voluntary and that companies can access it upon request, background check and on-site inspection. Since its implementation, SERNAPESCA has delivered 39 certifications in Los Lagos region.
On the other hand, the regional director of SERNAPESCA in Los Lagos, Eduardo Aguilera, valued the effort of the industry and government authorities to improve the competitiveness of the chillen salmon industry, improve their position in international markets and optimize their production methods .
Aguilera also emphasized SERNAPESCA´s interest in "reducing and - some day- getting rid of the use of antimicrobials, which will be a tremendous contribution to reducing the environmental impact of the activity."
