Green light for USD 32 million recirculation fish farming in Tierra del Fuego

  (CHILE, 5/20/2017)

Magallanes Environmental Assessment Commission unanimously approved a recirculation fish farming project that Nova Austral had submitted to the Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) in November 2016.

The project will be developed on land at the former Estancia de Los Colorines, 45 kilometres north of Porvenir, and will make it possible to carry out in one of the greatest desires of the company Tierra del Fuego: to carry out salmon species farming from the egg incubation eye phase to smoltification state. In this way, the entire productive cycle in the region is achieved and fish from other regions will be stopped, which will generate more direct jobs based on Porvenir town.

The fish farming construction will take about 18 months and will require an investment of around USD 32 million.

The company plans to produce four lots of 3,125,000 smolts each, for a maximum projected production of 12 million fish per year.

The plant will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology in water recirculation, and will have a salmoduct that will make it possible to load the fish to the ad hoc ships and take them to the fattening centres after almost one year of growth.

The fattening process, which will last about 20 months, will take place in the area of Arecena, the Cockburn channel and the future sector to be relocated.

Finally, the fish will return to Tierra del Fuego for processing at the plant in Porvenir, which will complete the salmon production cycle south of the Magellan Strait.
