Green light for Marine Harvest feed plant in Skye
(UNITED KINGDOM, 2/23/2017)
The feed plant that salmon producer Marine Harvest plans to set up in Skye, the largest island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, has received the support of Highland Councillors.
The site that will house the undertaking is an old quarry at Kyleakin, which will now generate pellets for feeding fish farm stock.
Marine Harvest hopes that he new plant will be operative by 2018, and it estimates the project could create 55 full-time permanent jobs.
The plant will produce feed for the firm's Scottish fish farms as well as those in Norway, Ireland and the Faroe Islands.
The cost of the project is expected to run to GBP 93 million (USD 116 million) -initially the company had estimated a cost of GBP 80 million.
“We will do our utmost now to ensure that this large construction project is managed in a sensitive way,” Ben Hadfield, the company's Chief Operating Officer Feed and Managing Director, said after receiving the news of the approval.
“This provides a modern platform for us to further enhance the sustainability of the salmon farming sector,” he stressed.
However, there we concerns over the visual impact of a plant that will include 40-metre high buildings and a 60-metre chimney stack, West Highland Free Press reported.
Isobel McCallum, who chairs the planning committee, had submitted a motion to refuse the planning application, arguing that the developers had not done enough to meet existing policies on design.
