More than 2000 tonnes of salmon converted into fishmeal and fish oil
(CHILE, 3/9/2016)
A total of 2,200 tonnes of dead salmon from Los Lagos Region has already been landed at fishmeal plants in the Biobio through the three offshore fishing vessels (PAM).
Camanchaca plant of the Rocuant sector in Talcahuano is the only one, at present, that is processing this mortality to make fishmeal or oil, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) informed.
Yesterday the PAM Bucanero was performing operations in San Vicente to carry out landings and it is expected that other fishing vessels arrive in the coming days with more salmon that died after getting asphyxiated by harmful algal blooms in the X Region.
In addition to the fishing firm Camanchaca of Talcahuano, SERNAPESCA has authorized the movement to the fishing firm Fiordo Austral of Escuadron de Coronel sector to process salmon.
SERNAPESCA ensures that both unloading and processing at the plants have been developed under normal conditions and in compliance with the established protocols.
The national director of the organization, Jose Miguel Burgos, stated that in the case of those mortalities whose advanced level of decomposition does not make it possible for them to be processed as fishmeal the disposal in the ocean outside the 60 miles is being assessed with the Chilean Navy to avoid any risk to human health.
The official explained that 12 industrial fishing vessels, 52 wellboats and an important part of the artisanal fleet of Calbuco are collaborating.
"About 65 per cent of the salmon mortalities has been withdrawn from the affected farming centres, being t5ransported to fishmeal plants in the X, XI and VIII, so that only what effectively cannot be processed is intended for ocean disposal respecting the strict conditions set at the London Protocol, in which Chile forms part," Burgos concluded.
