CORFO and Ewos agree to collaborate in salmon farming boost
(CHILE, 7/23/2015)
Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion (CORFO) and the company Ewos Chile Alimentos signed a collaboration agreement in order to strengthen Chilean salmon production development.
The idea of both parties is to build a Comprehensive Fish Health Centre in Colaco, Los Lagos Region, which will require an investment of USD 10 million from Ewos.
This initiative is part of the production transformation and investment appeal strategy being carried out by CORFO, defined as one of the four lines of action that will be run by this institution to promote the revival of the Chilean economy.
According to Eduardo Bitran, CORFO executive vice president, with this type of agreements the institution offers "a strong signal of government’s commitment to sustainable regional and long-term development."
In the new facility in Colaco innovative feed diets will be developed, focusing on the health sector, and specific studies on animal welfare will be fostered.
CORFO and Ewos hope to contribute to disease prevention, handling and environmental sustainability to meet the demands of the national aquaculture and salmon farming industry.
Under the agreement reached, access to the resources of the centre will be available for training undergraduate and graduate students from different national and international universities and, in particular, their scientists to develop thesis and internships.
"The fact that Ewos decides to incorporate the health issue in its diets as a central differentiation theme seems a great initiative because it is a less invasive way to manage the health issue in the sector," Bitran said.
"That will have an impact on the productivity and sustainability of the industry that is key in this region. The industry has changed the socioeconomic façade in the southern zone," he stressed.
For his part, Andres Tagle, Ewos CEO, highlighted: "This has been the result of the word carried out for years, which was led by the manager of EWOS Innovation Chile, Javier González".
"We are pleased that the group has decided to make this investment that is the largest we have made as a company and which also has great relevance globally in the industry in terms of research and development (R+D)," the executive added.
Furthermore, he clarified that the company is committed to avoid the new center from being 100 per cent focused on its products, but what is expected is that there "the different researchers, businesses, universities and technical training centres linked to the sector hold discussions and work," Aqua reported.
