Cargill invests USD 30 million in shrimp feed plant

The multinational firm Cargill signed a joint investment agreement with the Ecuadorian company Naturisa to build a shrimp feed processing plant in the town of Guayaquil.

The new factory equipped with advanced technology will require an investment of USD 30 million and will generate 260 jobs. It is expected that it begins operations in 2017, with an annual production level of 130,000 tonnes of balanced feed for shrimp.

Cargill will have a 75 per cent stake in the plant, and management control while Nutrisa will retain a 25 per cent stake in the joint project.

"The investment creates a unique opportunity for Cargill to grow in aquaculture in Ecuador and opens the door to future investment opportunities for other commodities in the market," said the multinational company in a statement.

According to the president of the food and nutrition business of Cargill, Sarena Lin, this agreement positions the corporation as one of the largest producers of shrimp feed in Latin America.

"It creates new opportunities for both organizations' customers and stakeholders. Combining Cargill's vast resources and global reach with Naturisa's expertise will allow the new organization to provide the best solutions to our customers and ultimately support the growth of Ecuador," she pointed out.

The products that the Ecuadorian new plant will manufacture will be marketed under Purina brand.

Naturisa currently produces some 16,000 tonnes of shrimp, which it sells in the United States, Europe and Asia.

This company has a 50 per cent stake in Songa, the fourth largest shrimp processing and exporting plant, with a production of 100 tonnes per day.
