Tidal Vision Launches Ocean By-products on Kickstarter
(UNITED STATES, 5/26/2015)
New technologies offer to transform ocean by-products into high-quality, durable aquatic leathers and performance textiles, promoting sustainability and reducing waste, Tidal Vision founder and CEO, Craig Kasberg says. The new, Juneau-based company plans to formally launch on Kickstarter May 27.
"Two billion pounds of seafood by-products are thrown away each year in Alaska," Kasberg said. "By developing new technologies to up-cycle these by-products, Tidal Vision is looking to add value to sustainable fisheries, reduce waste, and provide quality consumer products such as durable aquatic leathers and, later, Chitoskin™ textiles."
Tidal Vision invented new tanning methods that produce practical and durable aquatic leathers.
Tidal Vision's naturally tanned and sustainably-harvested Alaska salmon leather will launch on Kickstarter on May 27. Their proprietary tanning formula has been perfected over 25 years and, for the first time, combines durability with environmentally-friendly ingredients in the process. The company will use the Kickstarter crowdfunding website as an opportunity to pre-sell their new products, as well as a means to fund the startup.
The durability, flexibility, glossy look, and smooth feel of Tidal Vision's aquatic leather comes from its proprietary water based finish, which is pneumatically pressed under 220°F into the aquatic leather.
Following the aquatic leather launch, Tidal Vision will make their first Chitoskin™ textiles and products available this fall. Chitoskin™ textiles for apparel and performance wear are naturally odourless because they contain chitosan. Chitosan is a material in crab and shrimp shells that naturally inhibits odour and is also 100 percent biocompatible.
Chitoskin™- crab shell fiber performance wear.
Tidal Vision's team invented a new method of extracting chitosan without the use of harsh chemicals. The process also produces chitosan with a higher tensile strength than is currently produced, which opens up many possibilities for chitosan to be used.
Based on a recent survey, 89 percent think that sustainability is important, but about 50 percent expect sustainable products to come with compromises in either price or quality.
"We think sustainability should not be a compromise. Broader use of these by-products through the innovative processes and sources Tidal Vision uses, helps makes sustainable fishing advantageous economically, environmentally and socially," Kasberg said.
"Consumers value sustainability, and they want quality and affordability just as much," Kasberg added. "We have built the foundation of this company on meeting all of those requirements. This is an exciting time for the ocean product industry in Alaska. We are encouraged by the strong support we have already received for this new model."
Inspired by coastal communities whose traditions, cultures, economies and ecosystems depend on Ocean sustainability, Tidal Vision believes sustainability should never be a compromise.
In Alaska alone, 2 billion pounds of fish and crab by-products are discarded to rot annually. This waste poses a potential environmental threat when concentrated on the ocean floor.
Tidal Vision is helping combat this waste and encouraging sustainable fishing practices by purchasing discarded by-products from sustainable fisheries. Tidal Vision has been using typically-wasted ocean by-products from the fish and crab industries to make apparel, fashion and accessory products.
Every ingredient in Tidal Vision's proprietary aquatic tanning formula is completely natural and even certified as food-grade by the FDA.
Tidal Vision's vision is about more than just mitigating an environmental threat, reducing waste and manufacturing quality products.
Sustainable fisheries face a huge economic disadvantage compared to their pillaging competitors. By purchasing their waste for high value uses, the company's business model adds value and therefore increases the resiliency of sustainable fisheries.
Tidal Vision's quality products are an elegant way for you to visually show your support for sustainable fishing. The company's products consist of Alaska salmon leather and its Chitoskin apparel and textile lines.
