Bumble Bee and WWF join efforts towards seafood sustainability
(UNITED STATES, 9/30/2013)
Leading seafood firm, Bumble Bee and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have announced a collaboration initiative to ensure seafood sustainability.
The announcement was made by Chris Lischewski, Bumble Bee’s President and CEO and Carter Roberts, President and CEO of WWF at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) annual meeting, which took place in New York City last Wednesday.
Of the joint commitment Lischewski remarked: "Today's shared commitment will enhance our efforts to educate consumers of the importance of seafood and ocean conservation. Through communications, consumer education, and retail partnerships, we aim to increase understanding of what is sustainably caught seafood, why it's important, and what measures can be taken to improve the health of the world's oceans. Ultimately, through this partnership our goal is to expand and create additional sustainably certified fisheries, and to impact seafood sustainability on a significant scale."
The CGI Commitment is a direct consequence of the WWF and Bumble Bee partnership, established this year to which Bumble Bee will inject USD 1 million spread over the following five years. The sum will be destined to WWF’s marine conservation efforts. It will be funded through the sale of its line of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified products.
Lischewski made a point of highlighting the pivotal importance oceans play in the world’s ecosystems and stressed the need for collective, sustainable management of ocean’s resources.
The firm's persident went on to add that the successful partnerships between scientists, NGOs and the industry have proven to be very effective in helping to prioritise conservation issues across the different sectors.
Bumble Bee’s CEO pointed out that his company was committed to responsible, sustainable fishing practices and would continue to play an active role in developing and implementing conservation measures to ensure the sustainability of the oceans.
Bumble Bee became a member of the CGI in 2013 and has since contributed to the Oceans and Fisheries Conservation and Management network within CGI’s Environmental Stewardship platform.
