Peruvian fishing firm evaluates investing in salmon farms
(CHILE, 5/23/2012)
In recent months, executives of Pesquera Diamante SA have evaluated the possibility of investing in Chilean salmon farming companies, mainly in the south of the country.
The Peruvian company representatives visited local salmon farms on several occasions, Diario Financiero reported.
If certain planned investments take place, Chilean firms would have capital to meet the rising operating costs – as a consequence of food and transportation costs –that have been experimented for some time and to prepare for the harvest period starting in the second half of 2012.
The fact is that the country's banks are not financing the fishing industry and salmon firms with intentions to carry out mergers are not getting the expected results due to the lack of capital.
The Peruvian company intends to focus its business in products for direct and indirect human consumption.
According to Diario Financiero, Chilean firms that have so far had discussions with Pesquera Diamante are evaluating two options:
- Entering as an equity partner, which after a certain period agreed between the parties allows them to withdraw the invested capital plus a certain interest;
- Entering as partners in the 'traditional' way, that is to say, it is maintained for a long period so that as the benefits that implies having the complete production chain can be totally exploited.
In the past year, the Chilean salmon industry has been moving towards the recovery of production levels it had before the crisis caused by the spread of the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) virus, which started in 2007.
Currently, Pesquera Diamante has 42 purse seine vessels and various industrial plants located near the ports of Chimbote, Supe, Callao, Pisco, Matarani and Illo, where fishmeal and fish oil are manufactured.
Moreover, their vessels fish for horse mackerel and mackerel for direct human consumption as fresh, frozen or canned products.
