Tropical Aquaculture Sustainable Practices Showcased on The Profile Series

  (UNITED STATES, 2/2/2011)

Last month, The Profiles Series, a television production company, went to Ecuador to film an educational segment about sustainable tilapia production in which Tropical Aquaculture tilapia farms were showcased. The programme will be ready for television in a couple of months.

The Profiles Series, whose mission is to create quality programming with the goal of educating viewers both nationally and internationally on a wide range of topics, sought Tropical Farms as leaders in sustainable tilapia production.

The segment filmed in Ecuador focused on the sustainability of Tropical operations. Leonardo Mariduena, Vice-Minister of Aquaculture, was interviewed and he mentioned that their practices are environmentally friendly and in accordance with the “Rights of Environment” policy that the Ecuadorian government established in 2008, a policy that Mariduena strongly supports.

Tropical Aquaculture has developed polyculture with shrimp and tilapia

“Environmental stewardship is the number one state policy at this time [and] an example of sustainability in regards to aquaculture production is what the company Tropical is carrying out at this time in this country (Ecuador). They are developing polyculture, in this case with shrimp and tilapia, which has very significant advantages…the most important being: responsible use of water, an adequate use of space and a (more) efficient use of feed,” said Mariduena. He went on to say that Ecuador is known at a worldwide level for “its leadership in aquaculture production.” “This is reflected in that they are the 5th largest producer of shrimp in the world and the largest tilapia producer in the America’s”, he added.

As a vertically integrated company, Tropical Aquaculture is able to ensure the strictest standards are met at every stage of production

About Tropical Aquaculture Products, Inc.

Founded in 1995 by John K. Schramm and based in Vermont, United States, Tropical Aquaculture Products, Inc. is the sales, distribution, marketing and accounting operation for a growing cooperative of aquaculture farms. Tropical Aquaculture focuses on quality and continuity of supply, ensuring world-class customer service.

Tropical Aquaculture founder, John K. Schramm

As a vertically integrated company, Tropical Aquaculture is able to ensure the strictest standards are met at every stage of production from the hatchery through delivery to its North American and European customers.

Founder John K. Schramm grew up on the coast of Maine and experienced first-hand the effects of the declining New England fisheries. John later entered into the trade with a vision to overcome one of its key issues – the ability to find high quality, sustainably sourced farmed fish to supplement wild supplies and fulfill consumer needs.

When John founded Tropical Aquaculture Products, Inc., tilapia was a little known fish to the North American market. His search for a consistent, high quality supply led him to the most established environmentally and socially conscious farms in Latin America.

Tropical Aquaculture Europe, the sister company of Tropical Aquaculture Products, Inc., was founded in August 2006 with the goal of providing the European market with a consistent supply of the highest quality, fresh tilapia.

Nearly 15 years later, Tropical has grown from a staff of one to a team of 22, supporting more than 5,000 jobs in Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil. Through a growing cooperative and list of sustainably farmed species, Tropical is continually expanding its product offering.

Currently Tropical product line includes: fresh tilapia, breaded and frozen tilapia, fresh and frozen shrimp, fresh trout and fresh Organic Irish Salmon
