Vinh Hoan Collagen Production from Pangasius

  (VIET NAM, 1/28/2010)

Vinh Hoan (Public, HCM:VHC) has been given the green light for the construction of a collagen plant in the Dong Thap province of China.

Vinh Hoan has been trying to maximize the value of its by-products from pangasius processing. The company has recognized that collagen has potential to be a new business venture given its wide usage in both the industrial and medical fields.

The plant will be constructed with a total capacity of 1000 tons/year, and the total investment cost will be USD 12 million. If successful, this project will not only bring good business results, but also will be meaningful in developing technology, effectively maximizing value of   pangasius’ by-products and adding value to the whole seafood industry in general. Construction will start in March 2010 and completed around October this year.

Vinh Hoan has collaborated with a strategic partner in developing efforts to transform concepts and ideas into bio-friendly products using collagen samples from the fish skin. The results from university's laboratory in the United Sates shows that collagen from fish is ideal because its purity and molecular weight.

Collagen is a type of protein present in the animal’s cartilage, skin and scales. Collagen has an unusual amino acid composition which is useful for human cell, tissue repair and regeneration. Because of its appealing characteristics, collagen is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.

With a total productivity of 300 tons of raw material per day, pangasius processing plants can supply every day with a huge amount of fish skin for collagen production. If fresh fish skin can be sold only at USD 0.1 per kilo, Vinh Hoan will be able to produce collagen and sell it for USD 25-30 per kilo.
