All illegal fishing activities will be strictly punished
(VIET NAM, 1/17/2023)
Vietnam will investigate and handle all cases of domestic fishing boats arrested by foreign countries, strictly punish all acts related to illegal fishing in foreign waters, and name them in the media, according to Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien.

In a recent interview with the Vietnam News Agency, Tien admitted to the fact that there are a small number of Vietnamese-flagged fishing vessels still fishing illegally in foreign waters.
To put an end to this phenomenon, the heads of local Party committees and authorities at all levels must maintain a sense of responsibility in leading and directing the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Localities are required to quickly estimate the number of fishing vessels, complete issuance of licenses, as well as installation of monitoring equipment and update of vessel data in the National Fisheries Database (Vnfishbase) as regulated to comply with the requirement to search for information and administration of vessels.
In the meantime, the fishing ports must keep statistics of all berths; control and monitor all catches to ensure traceability; strictly manage ships that do not dock at designated ports, Tien said.
He also stressed the importance of intensifying communications to raise public awareness about respecting the law and request fishing companies to resolutely refuse to purchase, process and export products from IUU fishing.

As for the fourth European Commission (EC) inspection to assess Vietnam's efforts to combat IUU fishing, scheduled for April 2023, the deputy minister said his ministry will coordinate with other ministries and sectors to launch patrols and inspections, and strictly penalize all acts of IUU fishing in accordance with the regulations.
At the same time, efforts will be made to investigate and prosecute any cases of brokering and luring fishermen to carry out illegal fishing in foreign waters.
In October 2017, the EC issued a "yellow card" warning against Vietnamese seafood exports after Vietnamese fishermen violated IUU fishing rules.
Since then, he has sent delegations to Vietnam three times to assess Vietnam's implementation of the commission's recommendations to remove the card.
