Ecuador will be able to certify the origin of its Patagonian toothfish exports
(ECUADOR, 11/6/2018)
The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) has granted Ecuador the status of Non-Contracting Cooperating Party (NCP) of its organization. This will make it possible to experimentally catch Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) to have their registration and certification of origin to be exported to any destination.

As a non-Contracting Cooperating Party, Ecuador must comply with regulation No. 10-05, which requires member countries to register exports of Patagonian toothfish in the Catch Documentation System (SDC), using the registration forms that are issued from this platform in order to ensure the non-exploitation of the resource.

The Patagonian toothfish resource is regulated internationally by the CCAMLR, a regional organization of fisheries management founded in 1982 with the objective of conserving the marine fauna and flora of Antarctica.
CCAMLR has implemented a series of rules and regulations for the management of marine ecosystems in the Convention Area, thus protecting the Antarctic marine living resources while allowing fishing activities related to this resource.

In Ecuador, Patagonian toothfish is a species that has not been exploited. Given this context, there is a need to determine its distribution and abundance, in a technical, scientific and legal framework for the development of the fishery, which is included in ministerial reports and agreements of the Ministry of Aquaculture and Fisheries.
