Compañía Pesquera Camanchaca says it does not know the reasons that led to the sinking of the ship Seikongen, which carried some 214 tonnes of live salmon from the company, in Los Lagos region.
The wellboat, belonging to the shipping company CPT Empresas Marítimas SA, sank on October 18 during the transport service of the biomass of the centre of Pilpilehue, owned by the subsidiary Salmones Camanchaca.
Through a statement, Camanchaca's general manager Ricardo García Holtz detailed that the salmon were removed alive, and that they died as a result of the sinking that occurred at a distance of approximately 1.5 km from the above mentioned farming centre.
He explained that CPT has a contract with Salmones Camanchaca for the transfer of biomass from the farming centres to the respective processing plants. In addition, he said the firm provides these services to several salmon companies with staff and boats of its own, "with high quality, state-of-the-art technology and a good reliability standard."
"We do not know the reasons for the sinking of the CPT ship, but both the reasons for it and the safety measures being taken to avoid and/or mitigate the effects of the sinking, including the extraction of the cargo and fuel, and the refloating of the ship, are arranged by the Maritime Authority and carried out by the actions taken by the responsible shipping company," said the executive.
On the other hand, he assured that Salmones Camanchaca and all its personnel, "are very attentive to the evolution of the events and are offering all the collaboration to the corresponding authorities and to CPT, and informing the neighbouring communities of the advances".
In this context, he emphasized that Salmones Camanchaca "is one of the parties affected by this regrettable accident", and expressed his confidence that the authority will determine the correct measures to prevent and avoid any major environmental contingency, and that "CPT from assuming the responsibilities and corresponding tasks derived from these facts".
Finally, the manager of Camanhaca clarified that these facts will not generate a material impact on the financial statements of the company, as the contract with CPT covers the value of the affected biomass.
